Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

My biggest accomplishment is that, a year and a half ago at age 52, I got my oversized behind off the couch and started running.  Not that what I was doing resembled running when I started, as my daughter told me, it was more like "shuffling".  I started with Couch 2 5K and progressed to the RTL Half Marathon plan.  7 months and 50 pounds (lighter!) later I completed my first half marathon .  Some would say that where I am now still barely resembles running, but I love it, am continuing to progress, and am not the last person to cross the finish line, so it works for me!

Short-Term Running Goals:

1.  Reach my goal weight by the end of 2014 which will be 110 lbs. less than where I started

2.  Finish my first full marathon, this October at the Marine Corps Marathon.  I cannot think of a greater group to run for, or with, and am totally pumped, inspired, and honored to be able to participate!

3.  That's year one.  I guess for year 2, if I know myself, I will plan to complete another marathon so I can continue to better my running and my time...  Clearly, I have not thought much beyond this October yet, it's kind of a major goal :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

In my lifetime.....

Maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle.  Continue to run every other day and to use that as a vehicle to explore new places, until no longer possible.  Running and mobility are freedom.

Personal:

My cheerleaders:

My awesome husband of 29 years (since 1985)!

My son, age 24 and my daughter, age 21

And of course, my best running partner, my 1 and a half year old Australian Cattle Dog / Boxer mix, Carmen.  We rescued each other, and she keeps me forever young.

They are my inspiration and they tell me I'm their "hero".  Without them, nothing would have meaning.

Having made it through a nasty winter which included a move, on Dec. 21, from our home of 20 years in Boston, I am determined to start fresh.  Today I am starting back at the beginning of the RTL half marathon program as well as returning to the gym for strength training.

Very excited - today I shifted gears to the FIRST Half Marathon training plan.  Had a great and positive speed work session.  I must have picked the right goal, because I can tell it is going to work - hard enough to improve yet not so hard that I'll quit. It is also easier to adhere to a plan since I committed to every other day running.  No more figuring out (read: negotiating with myself) WHICH 3 days to run each week, because life does get in the way, if you let it.  My short term goal is the Dumbo Double Dare (10K Sat., Half Marathon Sun.) at Disneyland this Labor Day Weekend.

It's so motivating to read the blogs here of all different ages and abilities of runners. We are all on our own journeys, whether to one day make the Olympic team, qualify for Boston, start learning to run at an age when many are hanging up their sneakers for good, or just to feel the wind on our faces and enjoy staying fit as we age. Inspiration is everywhere on this site - thanks!

Got lazy and ran on hotel treadmill bc I'm in the city.....BAD, BAD, BAD!  Hated every minute,  ended up counting my warm up as part of my run just to get finished sooner.  The only way I could have done worse was to not run at all. Thankfully, these days are few and far between.

Speed workouts are getting easier!  I have to work on the FIRST tempo runs, they are kinda fast....it's a mental thing, I think.  While the speed work is "fulfillingly challenging", the tempo runs are downright brutal, not fulfilling yet since I struggle physically and mentally beyond an appropriate amount to complete them.  I am going back and repeating these past two weeks in order to gain the upper hand and be able to continue with the schedule.  I think patience is a necessity, I didn't get here overnight and I have to progress through the program at a pace that suits me.

Hi there, I stumbled on your blog and was quite impressed with your bio. I am also in my 50's, empty nester, love running and was "rescued" by a 4-legged running buddy. His name is Miles. :)

My husband and I ran the Marine Corp Marathon in 2008 after our son came home safe from Iraq. All I can say is you picked an amazing marathon to run! We were so humbled and inspired by the whole experience. We had an awesome time and loved every minute. We ran as Charity Runners for the Semper fi Fund. Good luck with your training! I will check in to see how it is going. :)

Hi Stacy, I really appreciate your comments. It's so inspiring to know of someone who has run the MCM, AND has a son in the service. What a special occasion you had for doing the run. Sometimes this project feels a little daunting doing it all on my own and your comment was just the pick-me-up I needed after a tough run yesterday, thank you! I am happy to know that somebody may be checking up on me....my goal is to NEVER miss a training run between now and Oct. 26th. If anything goes amiss at least I will know that it wasn't from lack of preparation :)

Fast for me, bearing in mind that I started at run/walking at 16:00+.....now that I'm actually following a plan that addresses this I think there will be some legit progress.  I am aiming to run with the 5:30 pace group in the marathon.  Just the upcoming weight loss alone is supposed to be worth almost 2 min. off my mpm pace.  Dare to dream, LOL

Read the best quote this a.m. which reminded me of my absolute hero, my dad, who was a huge fan of John Wayne:  "Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway."   I know in my heart that dad's watching over me, cheering me on ;)

Great work out!!! I have never run with a pace group. I think it would be a huge advantage. I have a variety of excuses for not doing it. :)

Our son-in-law is a HUGE John Wayne fan also. Lost one of my biggest fans and best friend 2 years ago (my mom). She was always waiting at the finish line for me. She loved to go to my marathons, cuz she liked to get a sweatshirt. She "runs" with me at all my races. Your dad sounds like a he was a good guy. He would be very proud of you. Keep up the good work! :) :) :)

From toto too on Thu, Jun 05, 2014 at 17:09:19 from 98.109.19.250

Thanks!! That is awesome that your mom was always there for you! My parents have been gone since way before I started running, but were always so supportive of things I did. I know they are with me in spirit and I will be dedicating some of those tough final miles to them to help get me through.

I have never had the courage to run with any group or club yet....working on it, intimidated about being slow, ha ha. I thought it would be a really great thing to have a group to run with at the marathon, so I'm doing the Clif pace group and 5:30 is the slowest they have, so I will make sure I can do that.

My sister is here visiting from CA so it has been hard to discipline myself.  I put off Saturday's run to Sunday, which wasn't the end of the world, but then today I was really feeling terrible....I've had a cold for a few days, so I put off my 10 mile run.  I'm determined to get plenty of rest tonight and get out there tomorrow so I can stay on schedule.  Fortunately, I have a little leeway the way my schedule is set up.  I have gotten a nice early start on training to allow for unexpected things like this cold.

I have trouble getting out of bed to get an early start in the morning and, as a result, end up running at some tough times for heat and humidity, making it much harder than it needs to be.  Today was one of those days.  As much as I try to keep a positive, upbeat attitude, I honestly was thinking that if 10 miles was this hard today, how the HECK am I going to run 12 next week, let alone 26.2 in 16 weeks.....sigh.  The thing that keeps me going is that I know the fall will be better....I doubt even a freakishly hot day for late Oct. will hit 85-90 (I sure HOPE NOT!!), and I am slowly but surely gravitating towards an earlier schedule, which for me means running at 9 or 9:30 these days.  Hopefully I can keep driftiing closer to a 7 or 6:30 a.m. start as I approach the height of the summer and my longest runs.

I feel your pain. :) I am not a morning runner and I wish I was because it would be sooo much easier.

Summer training is not easy. It is amazing how heat can sap your strenght in a short time.

Just take it one run at a time. You will have good runs and some "not so good runs". But your goal is still the same and as long as you are working toward it you are making progress. I always tell our Cross Country runners that if they can run in the heat, they can run in anything!

Put the 10 miles behind you and don't even think about the 26.2 because you still have a lot of great training before you get there. Keep up the good work and Don't Look Back. ( My favorite Boston song) :)

From toto too on Tue, Jul 08, 2014 at 13:14:49 from 98.109.19.250

Thanks for the inspiring words, Stacy, your comments mean more than you know!! "Don't Look Back" is great advice, and you're absolutely right that I have plenty of good training to go. In fact, I'm really just getting started. We're having a couple of tough 90 degree, muggy days here when it's all you can do to leave the car AC and walk into the store with any energy left, and I know they'll pass. I'm sure you're right that if I can push through it in this I'll be able to run in anything!

Actually, it felt really good to go out again later....it helped pound that morning soreness out. I was half expecting to feel like I'd been hit by a truck when I got up this morning, but after a good night's sleep I felt fantastic today. Thanks, Stacy! I think I AM getting stronger, even though the long runs in the heat can feel somewhat discouraging. I just tell myself it will all pay off and when the weather cools I will see the results. I'm very psyched for Disney, always a fun time, and as people on fb are starting to freak out about the weather forecast (70's low/90's high!) Did the 2 races at Disneyland this weekend, so I guess in a roundabout way it counts as 19.3.  It was hot and humid, just like I'm used to, and totally crowded with people.....lots of bottlenecks and places where it just wasn't possible to run without elbowing people aside.  I just took it easy and aimed for racking up the mileage and collecting the medals and some great photos!  Back to serious business this week, time is getting shorter.  Will shoot for 20 next weekend so that I know I can do it without splitting it into 2 days.  It was a good way to gauge where I'm at with pace and such, so I'm glad I went.  I definitely still have my work cut out for me!  Trying to stay positive since the transfer and deferral period has ended....no backing out now :)

"Magic Mile" for race time prediction....puts me in the 5:46-6:06 finish time frame. This backs up my 6 hr. prediction based on the 10x800's so I feel confident in the combined accuracy of the two, barring whatever freak thing(s) may happen on race day. I'm ok with that, for my first I'll be happy to be alive and standing and it'll only be up from there.  I was hoping to go with the 5:30 pace group, but didn't buckle down and lose the weight. Who knows why we can or can't focus and accomplish things when we want to.....for me it has to just click and happen, and unfortunately it didn't until 3 weeks ago.  Fortunately I have found a very nice group of back-of-the-packer's on fb and we have agreed to form our own 6 hour pace group to beat the bridge and finish together, so I know I won't be running alone through already-closed water stations lol.  I hear the crowd is very supportive and stays at the finish line till the bitter end for this one, so that's encouraging, too.  All in all, with the hard work almost done (this week!) I am getting very excited for race weekend!!

Well, this is it, the final "long run".  I had been following a plan, then bought the book and saw they had a "novice" version of the plan which called for 8 today (original called for 10) so I split the diff.  My faithful and loyal dog accompanied me, too bad she can't come to the race with me :) Nothing else left to do now, off to the marathon next weekend!!

Wow, I did the Marine Corps Marathon! Without a doubt one of the coolest experiences of my life. The weather was perfect, and the course was the perfect layout for my hubby to pop around and see me at different spots....6 including the finish line. I think the training, the fueling and hydration during the race, were all successful. There are definitely things I'll do differently next time.....I skimped some on cross training, I didn't lose all the weight I wanted. I'm sure it's always something. My goals were minimal: 1. Finish 2. Not get swept 3. Not get carted away in an ambulance. It was a fun weekend and I took advantage of all the events offered...first timer's pep rally, expo, pasta dinner....I figured I'd only be a first-timer once! And before I even went I knew I wanted to do another. I will definitely try my luck at the lottery for this one again in 2015.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You are no longer a Newbie! Welcome to the marathon ranks. Sounds like your training really paid off. There is nothing like finishing your first marathon. Great job!!!

Thanks, Stacy! I had a really great weekend. Now I just have to get caught up on the weight loss end of things, especially with the holidays coming.

Funny thing, I thought I was a little crazy having a half marathon scheduled at Disney World in two weeks, but now I am very glad as there's suddenly this big void in my life LOL. I would kinda be floundering with getting back to training and stuff if I didn't have some other events already set. Thanks for your support on here!
